Those Are Not Rare Fandoms

(Anonymous)
So Yuletide is becoming a rare character exchange - anyone else see this happening?

When we're including things like Doctor Who and Trek novels and Star Wars EU - just because they're only nominating characters like Thrawn... Sorry, nope, those are the opposite of small fandoms. Star Wars and Doctor Who and Star Trek? Come on.

Thrawn and Madame Vastra and whatever Romulans might be rare, sure, but they still shouldn't be in yuletide.

*chinhands*

It's nice to see the other side of the argument come out of the woodwork...

Actually, it's even more absurd now, if we go with this 'all linked fandoms are in if they are under 750 works, all characters included'. Because now the Doctor and Luke and Leia and Spock are actually eligible under the rules.

Is this really yuletide? Really?

Just wait until the fanfic/fanart discussion, they're probably going to allow even more things in.

IDK. It's weird that a challenge based on exclusivity is about stretching to include the most possible things. I guess it's because the exclusivity makes it What the Cool Kids Do.

I will be over in the corner with my book fandoms.

Mmm yes. I'll keep requesting in ultra-small mostly-book fandoms and offering in ultra-small fandoms (my largest last year was 29 fics on AO3), because the odds on matching with someone else who thinks about yuletide the same way as I do seem much greater.

Also, comics fandoms make my head hurt from the sound of all those canons. But I'm aware that's my problem.

Couldn't they say that those characters have to stay within the parameters of the book/etc that is nominated? So if 'Book Title X' has the Doctor in it, you can request to see more of what he does in the story but you can't ask for him to be in a whole new adventure. If that makes sense?

TBH I'm from the other side of the argument here, but I agree with you.

The whole argument hinges on the questions that the mods aren't even asking. What makes a separate fandom and how should that be handled in terms of eligibility, instead of trying to address it by making either a lower works limit or an additional character limit.

In terms of what makes a separate fandom comics would probably be less of a problem than tie-ins.

I honestly agree with you.

Even beyond the megafandoms you cite, there's also medium-size fandoms that I don't really think belong in a RARE exchange. One of my year-round fandoms, for example, barely squeaked in last year, but under the new rules it'll be eligible for years and years to come. I was ready for it to have graduated this year, and now I'm like, "uhhhh..."

I get that Yuletide is "the cool thing", and that everyone wants their fandoms to be included, but really, there are loads of other exchanges for rare characters/rare pairings/medium-rare fandoms.

Late to the party on this comment thread, but...

I think they can be judged on their own merits...or rareness really. Yeah, the Thrawn books are really not Yuletide appropriate, but I'd kill for a fic, any fic, based on the one-off SWTOR novel Fatal Alliance. No fics anywhere for that and no main-series canon characters are present. imho this is the kind of tinyfandom-inside-big-fandom that should be eligible.

I guess they'd rather be inclusive than rule out something like that.

If you want to try and get Fatal Alliance approved as a fandom, I would totally offer it. I loved those characters.

...squee!

I will definitely try to get that approved, anon. I did too and have been craving for some fic. Would enjoy writing it as well!

Do the Warhammer 40,000 fandoms count as small fandom considering even I've heard of the games and I don't game or rp at all. They're as big name to me as Dungeons and Dragons or Whitewolf.

Re: Those Are Not Rare Fandoms

That's not the point, though. It doesn't matter if it's popular in terms of RL and how many people known it; it's whether or not it has fanfiction written for it.

I don't know if there are fics or not for the fandoms you've listed, but take me, for example. I'm going to be requesting a fandom that 80% (if not more) of the world is familiar with -- but there's a grand total of two fics available.

Re: Those Are Not Rare Fandoms

I think ayrt was referring to how that fandom has a lot of fic, actually. But I heard an argument somewhere saying that the majority of those were original fic or people turning their game campaigns into fic. I think there are specific canons like the video game or individual novels have been nominated for yuletide and not just Warhammer in general. In which case, nominating that fandom would be well within the rules.
