You're right: Tony Stark fic based on the movies isn't any more common than BBC Sherlock fic. But Tony Stark fic (based on the comics, or the Ultimateverse comics, or the Armored Adventures cartoon, or whatever) is significantly LESS common than BBC Sherlock fic.

The point is, both Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes have one mega-franchise that completely skews their eligibility. So saying that Sherlock can appear as a character in his other Yuletide-eligible fandoms (Elementary, A Study in Emerald, etc.) because he's over 100 years old, but Tony Stark can't appear in HIS other fandoms because he's only 50 years old, is not exactly a fair rule.

Exactly my thoughts. There is no difference. Adaption is adaption. The character's age is irrelevant, the fanwork numbers count.
