I just think the character limit adds too much confusion. If a fandom's in, its characters should be in. If a fandom's out, its characters should be out.

Does that mean that an Agents of Shield type show could have Coulson nominated as a character, and someone could conceivably also ask that Clint/Coulson be a pairing despite being a juggernaut pairing of the umbrella MCU? Yes, it's possible. But honestly, I think there's this paranoia about people sneaking in non-rare ships and canons that is largely unfounded. Sure you'll get a participant who says get a cross this legitimately rare fandom with Supernatural or default every so often, but making rules to protect against something that 99% of participants don't do just makes everything more complicated than it needs to be.

Also, when that sort of extreme request happens, mods should tell the participant that their request is not in spirit of Yuletide in addition to telling the assigned writer optional details are optional.

I agree with you one hundred percent. In an exchange with 2000 participants the handful who will try to 'game' it isn't that big of a deal. And the chances of them even getting matched on/getting that fic written is even lower.

Agree with all of this from the bottom of my heart. And if the character is so popular anyway and presumably gets written by a mass of people all over sudden, then the fandom won't be eligible soon anyway.
