YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
To get a small pre-Yuletide discussion going...

What did you regret doing last year? What will you do differently this year?

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
This year, I will actually have a completed fic uploaded at deadline.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

YES. Last year was like the third year in a row where I threw a thousand words in and finished later, and I'm sick of doing it that way.

Also, I will write at least one treat.

This year, I will actually get my fic up and betaed before the freaking deadline and not have to ride the calendar like I'm at a rodeo.

I offered too many fandoms last year. Almost 30! This year I want to keep it under 10.

Also I want to write a shorter fic. Every Yuletide my fic grows in length, and last year's was 20k! I'd like to write treats this year, too, and that would be much easier if I'm not tackling a mini-epic.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

Yes, this.

I want to have at least a couple of fics where I already know the canon pretty well, I do really light revision of it (reading selected passages, watching tiny clips), I sit down and write, the writing doesn't go for more than a few days, and then I finish the story.

I mean, I want to finish stories in plenty of time to let them rest and think about them again and polish them. I don't want it to be next, next, next. But I don't want to agonise over huge plotty epics again either.

This year I need to back up the treats that I write in Dropbox, because I lost all of them last year when my computer died. :\ I also want to beta more people's fic, because I did a few last year and it was really fun!

If I get an "anything" or "no details at all" assignment, I'll write either a quick half-assed fic that clearly shows I didn't give a fuck about writing it, or a total OOC AU crackfest that puts even untherius to shame. If you don't bother telling me what you want and don't want, I don't bother wondering what you'd like.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
If I get an anything prompt, I'd write something short and totally the fic of my heart because well, you said anything recip and at least one of us should be happy. I don't think I could even attempt to write something Untherius would appreciate.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

Funny you should mention Untherius. I recently got matched to write for him in an exchange.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

My condolences.

My condolences x 1000 to whoever poor soul got him as a writer.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
Actually, I rather liked his prompts, and I think the story should be pretty workable.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

If I get no prompt, I check to see if the person has received other gifts. If they have and left nice comments, I do my best to write what they'll like.

If this is their first year, I cut them some slack but will probably write a shorter story than I would have otherwise.

If they only ever leave generic "thank you for writing for me" comments or worse, they just don't comment at all, they're getting 1000 words of orphaned coal.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

Not having time to get my fic betad by someone other than a close friend who was probably not objective when it came to my fic. (Basically, not wait until Dec. 15th to start writing my fic in earnest.)

Write more treats.

Write something in a fandom I've thought about writing for before, but always chickened out.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

I hope I'll manage to write more this year - last year I worked so hard on my main fic that I only had time for one half-assed treat, and since yuletide's the only fic I write all year, it felt like not enough to me.

That said all that work on my main fic paid off as it was my best-received fic ever (by a veeeery wide margin), so.

I dearly want to message the mods saying I'd like me and my sock to be matched to Untherius. I'd happily watch/read whatever his fandoms are and write some prompts for fandoms I know he offers regularly, whatever needs to be done, so I can receive a fic and comment from him. I think his writing is hilarious, and I don't think he should be matched to anyone who finds his stuff non-hilarious.

How can I do this/who should I send this to to avoid wank, _coal? I'm a NNF with zero history (wanky or otherwise) with the mods.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

Just email the mods.

Although honestly, I think someone being his recipient is more of a deal than someone writing for him. I don't think his request prompts are so bad. So don't mention your account AND your sock account, because having both is officially frowned on. Just tell them that you are willing to offer your account (meaning, your sock account) as Untherius' recipient and see what they say.

The Not Ready for Prime Time fics are live soon. He signed up to that. I'm interested to see what his stories look like.... shall we see if we can tell which one he wrote?

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
Ditto. I wouldn't mind getting fic from him in a few of our matching fandoms. :D

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
People always say this, and no one ever emails the mods, so fuck you.

Drama!

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
This year, I will make it clearer that I don't want a crossover with a fandom I didn't request.

Re: YULETIDE REGRETS AND RESOLUTIONS

(Anonymous)
This year, when I look at my offers and notice the character combination that would be just fine as long as my recipient doesn't ask for that one thing that I'm 99% certain no one wants anyway...I will remove the character(s) and/or fandom from my offers, since otherwise my recipient will, in fact, want it.
