Poll

(Anonymous)
Will _coal run out of wank before reveals?

I'm hoping for another recipient and writer find each other on meme wank to happen this year.

Mis-tagging early fics

(Anonymous)
What do you think about tagging things other than what your story is about if you post early to impede present shakers?

Would you do it? Does it infuriate you? Do you care at all?

Re: Poll

(Anonymous)
Considering the stuff _coal is currently wanky about, I'd say we've already run out of wank. Maybe around the deadline wank will pick up.

Re: Mis-tagging early fics

It annoys me but not hugely.

Re: Mis-tagging early fics

I don't care at all, but I probably wouldn't do it and just not tag with anything but the fandom until reveals. I guess it's kind of amusing to tag with random stuff to throw people off the scent.

To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

(Anonymous)
My recipient gave prompts and was pretty clear on what she wanted in three of her requests. But the fourth one, the one I matched her on, she was a lot vaguer. I'm trying not to let that discourage me, because it doesn't necessarily mean she likes that one less. Sometimes it's just hard to think up something to say, right? Anyway, the lack of prompting is okay, since I love the canon and I have an idea anyway!

I'm actually really sold on my idea. I've written up plenty of notes and have close to a thousand words finished already. I just feel good about it; like it'll be a decent fic that I'll truly enjoy writing.

...However, I don't know if it's a story my recipient will actually like, as it pairs up the two characters she requested. She didn't mention shipping them -- but nor did she mention not wanting anything romantic between them. But there is a pretty big age difference at play, so maybe she simply felt that she didn't need to point it out?

Should I mail the mods and ask them to make sure? Part of me wants to, because it is a gift after all. But on the other hand, what if she says no? I'm so focused and into this particular idea, so I wouldn't have any idea what else to write. I just don't know if I honestly could scrap everything I've already done and start over -- with no inspiration whatsoever.

Another thing is that she says she signed up because she had a lot she wanted to write (trying not to let that discourage me either). And if that was the case with her writer too; "Pen the fic you have been wanting to write and I'll be happy." So maybe I should just take her word for it and hope the pairing won't squick her?

I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, PLEASE ADVICE.

Last year my gift was tagged as another fandom

can you stalk to see if she has ever written or bookmarked a fic with that pairing? or if she's ever talked about the pairing in meta in her journal?

Re: Mis-tagging early fics

(Anonymous)
It only upsets me if it's a misdirection that's in the same fandom. If the fic is tagged Avengers, Steve/Tony, and curtain!fic, it doesn't bug me because it's obviously fake. But if the fic were Sleepy Hollow Abbie/Ichabod/Katrina and it turns out to be Ichabod/Jenny, that's gonna bug me because I'll have been excited about the fake tags (whether or not the actual fic is something I want to read).

Spreadsheet of Coal Letter References

Here is the spreadsheet of all Coal/Dentistry/Mining/Gwen Stacey references I could find on the forums. It's caught up to the last post on the old threat. If I've missed one or you find a new one, please let me know! (link is self-updating if I add new Coalies)

Other Exchanges

Can we get a thread going here of other exchanges around this time that HAVE NOT CLOSED SIGN UPS YET that other nonnies might be interested in?

I think that's a great idea, actually. Adds an extra layer of mystery to the whole deal.

+1 fingers crossed the #yuletide tag on tumblr will bear wanky fruit

Re: To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

AFAIK, there are no fics for this fandom period. I've tried looking to see if she's mentioned the fandom/pairing in her journal, but couldn't find anything. She doesn't appear to use it a whole lot though (or maybe the posts are just locked).

Re: To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

(Anonymous)
You certainly could pair them right away and that would be fine, but you also have the option of emailing the mods and asking the question. I don't think that would hurt anything.

Re: To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

Preface: I fucking love age differences. Het/slash/femslash, regardless, I love it. Bullet proof fictional kink. You give me two people with huge age differences who might be fucking, and as long as everyone is at least ~16, I will ship the fuck out of it.

That being said, age differences squick A LOT of people for valid reasons. If she didn't mention shipping them, I would absolutely ask the mods. It may genuinely not have occurred to her that anyone would ship them or she was trying to be polite and not ship bash. I'm not saying that you have to, but in your place, I would. (which is advice that combined with $2 will not even buy you good coffee.)

Good luck either way, coalie! It's a rough situation to be in.

I know you say you don't know what else you could write, but my first thought is to try writing the story you're so focused on and excited about, and then when that's done maybe try to write an additional story that doesn't pair the characters up? That's probably asking a lot of you, but if you think you might have another fic in you for this fandom it could be a good strategy, so your recipient has more than one fic to choose from of different types and you won't have to sacrifice your creative energy (for lack of a less cheesy term). Maybe once you finish this fic you'll feel more inspired for the fandom? Or keep writing and maybe by the time the mods get back to you with her answer you'll have it mostly finished and can brainstorm something new with whatever additional info recipient gives you?

Re: To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

(Anonymous)
Oh man, me too! I love age differences -- and I guess it might have blinded me in this case.

You're right; I shouldn't take her lack of a "Don't pair them up!" notice as an okay to do it. She genuinely might not see the ship potential at all, and if that's the case and it ends up squicking her I'd feel awful (regardless of how much I personally enjoyed writing the fic). It's a gift, and I ought to put my recipient first.

Thank you for the advice! I think I'll go and try to write that email to the mods now.

More Pinch Hits!

(Anonymous)
Do any of you even try to pick them up this early? Or do you only wait until you've finished your main assignment?

Re: To ask, or not to ask. (I've been vacillating for days, please help!)

(Anonymous)
I think that's a really good piece of advice, thank you!

I think I'll go ahead and ask the mods, but I will also try to finish this story (hopefully I can get the gist of it drafted before she replies, so I don't end up getting totally discouraged if she doesn't want it). I genuinely don't know if I have another story in me for this particular fandom, but you're right that any additional info from my recipient might help. If all else fails, I'm familiar with one of her other fandoms -- I didn't offer it, but if push comes to shove I guess I can give that one a try instead.

Re: Poll

(Anonymous)
I wondered if I was recipient for the "porn-tastic recip" thread at the end of last post, but I wouldn't call the characters I requested "massively underage children," so I'm curious if that thread's OP will reply again so I can fish for more details.

Re: Mis-tagging early fics

(Anonymous)
Tagging with obviously fake or big-for-Yuletide fandoms is cool with me, but I do think it can be a bit cruel to get somebody's hopes up that a new fic has been written for their super tiny fandom only three people have heard of and then yoink that away.

That said, tagging your recip's fic with the name of every fandom they requested probably wouldn't be a bad way to handle it if you're posting their gift really early.

Re: More Pinch Hits!

(Anonymous)
I've grabbed early before and would have tried on one this time around already except someone got there before me. Kitty, probably.

Re: More Pinch Hits!

(Anonymous)
I definitely do if I love them. My writing process usually involves thinking about the canon a lot before trying to write, so any lead time is good, and it's okay if I'm working on a couple of stories in parallel.

So I currently have an assignment and a pinch hit. I definitely would want to finish at least one to my satisfaction before taking on any more. :D
