Not sure if Yuletide will see any new records, but _coal is already turning out more posts than in the past couple of years.
And all that, just because I didn't get that shippy fic I wanted so badly that one year!

Worst request you've seen so far

(Anonymous)
The request in this one for fix-it fic of a real-life hate crime seems particularly tone-deaf: http://wickedwonder1.livejournal.com/71866.html

Re: Worst request you've seen so far

(Anonymous)
Wow. I don't know anything about the movie or the RL incident inspiring it, but that would be like someone asking for fix-it for The Laramie Project.

Ie, not okay, and probably defeating the point.

/anon who is asking for fix-it in a totally fictional fandom, totally fictional, I swear.

Which fandoms do you think will produce the most entertaining output by _coal standards? Five minutes of hell versus childhood-destroying cum inflation?

Apparently not running this year, thank god.

This is the new thing, I gather? At least allows you to select what OT3s you can write for, instead of requiring you to commit to any combination in the whole fandom.

Your Dentist's Offers

(Anonymous)
So tell me Coalies: as a rule, do you and your dentist offer the same fandoms, completely separate fandoms, or some mix of the two?

I know some people contrive to not offer what their dentist is requesting and vice versa, but what about offering the same thing?

Re: Your Dentist's Offers

(Anonymous)
I mix it up, but my dentist doesn't offer anything that would make it obvious to people who know me that my dentist and I are associates.

What shall I do?

(Anonymous)
Back during my first YT I didn't really produce coal, I just wasn't a good writer.

I have improved since then, but now I am a bit anxious, as I plan to request/offer the fandom I matched back then. So far I never offered a fandom I already have written, but for a number of reasons - mainly because I fell back in love with that fandom and I'm running a bit short on fandoms to offer - I will offer some of those again.

Now I've seen that my receiver from that first year requested that fandom again.

I'm really not sure if that person is going to be happy to get a gift from me again, should we get matched this year too, so I'm not sure if I shall offer the fandom or scramble for a new offer, and only have my dentist offer the old one.

Any ideas?

Re: What shall I do?

(Anonymous)
I've received half-assed badfic a couple times, but I couldn't tell you any of the writers names without looking it up.

If you're happier with your writing now, and would enjoy writing the fandom again, go for it?

Sign up for dentist and myself done. Now I just need to find the energy to do a letter. And yes, there are prompts in the requests, so even if I don't manage the letters, it's not too bad.

How Do You Decide What To Offer?

(Anonymous)
Do you never offer fandoms you've already written? Do you offer the same ones every year? Do you pick offers for the challenge or do you prefer to go with what you know? Why?

I never offer the same fandoms. The challenge of writing for a fandom I'd never considered before reading someones letter is more interesting to me than going for something I'm already comfortable with.

Re: How Do You Decide What To Offer?

(Anonymous)
I haven't ever offered a fandom I've written before. There are a couple with large ensembles I might have considered offering again, in order to use different characters, but both are medium-for-Yuletide and I matched with people who misused "any" in their requests, and I don't want a repeat ofthat.

As a general rule, if a fandom is small enough for me to be comfortable offering "any" characters, I don't want to write for it more than once or twice.

I also rarely offer or request fandoms I've already received fic for.

To game or not to game

(Anonymous)
Should I rig my offers to dramatically raise the chance of my being assigned to a friend in order to write the fic of her heart for the teeny fandom of her heart?

Re: To game or not to game

(Anonymous)
Why just write it regardless and give it to her as a treat?

But I don't WANT to change my requests!!

(Anonymous)
I don't want to have to change my requests to get a fic I don't really want!! I might be in the minority, but I would rather go to the PH list, still write for someone, and possibly not get a story. I'm okay with that! I would rather have a story in one of the four fandoms-of-my-heart then a story in an 'ehh, people have offered this and I know it so I can fill out my letter with it' fandom.

That's not why I do Yuletide! And I will clearly not be excited about it and my author might pick up on it. Boohiss.

Re: But I don't WANT to change my requests!!

(Anonymous)
I don't think you're in the minority at all. That's why everyone is arguing with that post.

The treat that ate Manhattan

(Anonymous)
A few prompts in the letter post caught my eye and now I'm sitting on a combined 6000 words of fic for two fandoms I probably won't be matched with. I'm feeling slightly bad for my eventual official recipient, because there's a high chance I won't be able to capture the zeitgeist for them. Kinda had this problem last year, too - the treatfic I wrote was definitely shorter, but I (and, apparently, the people who read it) thought it was much better, probably because I had more fun writing it. Sorry, eventual recipient, I swear I care about you. I just care about these randos more.

Anyone else have this problem?

Re: The treat that ate Manhattan

(Anonymous)
My treat last year was a third the size of the fic I actually wrote, but also kind of perfect in its completeness, whereas my official fic was... good, and very in character, but a little rushed just because it was (a very large word count) and could have been (double that) to have been fully fleshed out, and there just wasn't time.

Unless you give your official recip absolute coal, no one is going to go through all the things you wrote, even your friends. Most of them won't know more than a single fandom anyway, so why bother?

I don't like: explicit sex that is meant to be taken seriously, non-consensual sex, sad things, traumatic things, babies and small children, ennui, extended dystopias.

Ugh.

I don't see the "Ugh" factor....

...but on the other hand, what does "I don't like explicit sex that is meant to be taken seriously" mean?

This is a mod?

(Anonymous)
Even leaving aside her rudeness and incompetence/ignorance about the specifics of Yuletide, jenn_calaelen can't manage to write a mod post that clearly communicates what she's trying to say. She doesn't have the basic sense to put separate issues into separate paragraphs or even to put spaces between all her goddamn paragraphs for easier reading. All the current panic with people thinking they have to change their requests was created by her inept writing.

Yeah, let's pick a mod who doesn't know how to explain things! What a great idea!

Re: This is a mod?

(Anonymous)
I'm not a fan of jenn by any means. (She lost ALL my sympathy over ultimategate.)

But I feel like a lot of people in her position would wind up an object of hatred and wank. (Hi, Bridget!)

It would be a lot simpler if we could have total anarchy with Yuletide, but somehow I doubt that would last very long either.

People swearing up and down that they're super chill and would be cool with anything when they clearly don't mean it may be my least favorite people in all of Yuletide.

I would worry this is about me, but my letter isn't up yet.

But to forestall a possible scenario:

Just because I clearly love pairing fic does not mean I'm unhappy with gen. Take what I'm saying at face value.

However, anyone who says "I love everything! No slash, no women, no scat, and no kids! And you'd better use all the America spellings! Eww!" is a different story, and yeah, idk about those people.

Treating etiquette

(Anonymous)
Someone's requested two fandoms that, while they're not canonically linked, are at least associated with each other enough that their letter lumped them together somewhat. The way they phrased their requests got me thinking that I'd LOVE to see if I could write something where Protagonist A meets Protagonist B.

One of their general Do Not Wants is crossover fic, on the grounds that they only want to read about the worlds they've requested. I'd obviously be staying within requested worlds, and there would be entirely plausible in-universe ways for these characters' lives to intersect, but I still feel a little off about it.

If I can make the story work, I'll write it one way or the other. But do I do it as a treat (probably posted as late as possible to ensure that if their writer defaults, they still go to PH and my crossover doesn't end up being their only gift), or post it outside of the collection after Yuletide and just let this person know that their letter inspired it?

Re: Treating etiquette

(Anonymous)
If those are the grounds they gave, I think it'd be fine to put that as a treat.

Do you have a nemesis?

(Anonymous)
I have this one small fandom where the only other person who ever requests/offers it in Yuletide and other small fandom exchanges only wants characters I don't care about, so we are destined never to be matched. I don't even know this person except for always seeing their name/letter in these exchanges and being disappointed that we're so close, yet so far.

Does anyone else have someone like this?

Re: Do you have a nemesis?

(Anonymous)
I have something like that, although it isn't one particular person.

I write for small fandoms that aren't obscure or try-hard like most of the people who lurk in chat [they're films and tv shows made in the past 5 years give or take]. Every year only one or two other people usually wind up filling the random fandom I get assigned for the year. Luckily I always write a fic that is not only longer than the other person(s) but that gets more hits and kudos as well. So I feel like I win.

Best one was last year when my author wrote me the most bullshit fic ever. The offered in a fandom that only has one real ship and it's slash, yet they wouldn't write me them in a relationship because she 'couldn't see it'. Had she looked at any of the other ten fics that were all for my ship maybe she would have known what she was getting in to!!!!! But I digress. I wrote a treat for someone else in the fandom and my fic got the most acclaim, as did the other couple fics written for the fandom. Down at the bottom of the barrel was the shitty gen fic they wrote for me.

I love competing with the yulegoat who fucked me over and beating them at it.

Curious: number of bucket offers

(Anonymous)
Out of curiosity, and obviously realizing _coal represents a tiny fraction of the total population, how many fandoms did/are people making bucket offers for?

For me it's 5. I also offered 9 other fandoms the regular way, though I may delete one of those before the end (don't worry, it has plenty of other offers).

Re: Curious: number of bucket offers

(Anonymous)
I'm still narrowing it down, but I usually offer a couple dozen through the bucket.

Once more because I can't read...

(Anonymous)
I'm sorry for asking this question again, I know I've seen it before... but now that I've been reading letters I feel sad about it.

If Requester asks for A, B, C, D, and Offerer lists A, B, then there's no way they'll match up? A lot of the letters I read explicitly say they'd be happy with any of the four (but presumably not "any" of the nominated characters) so it seems like a shame they're going to be ships that pass in the night.

Re: Once more because I can't read...

(Anonymous)
It's really not a shame at all. Everyone will get a fic no matter what they request, and the fact that they excluded some people from their pool of matches is not a disaster and in fact possibly good and possibly even deliberate (to exclude something they don't want, to better get at something they do).

Request to letter ratios

(Anonymous)
So how are your fandoms you're planning on offering doing for letters so far? Mine have:

4 requests, one letter
4 requests, one letter
5 requests, technically two letters but one of them's locked
15 requests, two letters (get it together, Discworld fandom!)

Guess it's still early yet, but at the moment it's feeling like my assignment's going to be more of a crapshoot than usual, and I'm having trouble finding stuff to bookmark for future treats. How are your offered fandoms faring, letter-wise?

Re: Request to letter ratios

(Anonymous)
17 requests, 7 letters
8 requests, 8 letters (I'm impressed)
5 requests, 1 letter
3 requests, 0 letters
0 requests, 0 letters
0 requests, 0 letters
0 requests, 0 letters

A Question...

(Anonymous)
While the bucket offers don't show up now, does anyone know if they'll become visible on the summary after signups close? Or is it a permanent thing?
