Are you referring to the quotation marks? The book series is British, and BrEng uses single quotes for dialogue. The fic is completely grammatically correct in BrEng.

I got three comments on three different stories shortly after it opened! Only one is from a recipient. It just makes me so happy to get TWO comments from people not the person the fic is for! I am on like cloud 9!

Seriously, SO freakin' glad my dentist signed up this year. I got a barely-minimum crapfest that I am pretty sure has been orphaned (I woulda orphaned that shit) and my dentist got two absolutely amazing fics that spoke straight to her prompts and were clearly written by people who wanted to write them.

I'm really glad I said I would be AFK, because choking out a "thanks for writing! so glad we both love this fandom!" comment is killing me. I can't even tell whether or not the fic I got is supposed to be funny. (If it is, it failed. If it's not, it's pretty pointless.)

If I was your writer, yay, I treat optional details as unoptional as much as possible. Sorry about the length, but I don't like redundancy, and I felt like it would lead to "oh yeah, and there was this one time" with no need to be in the story.

In fairness to my author, I did not list anything as a squick or trigger, and I requested a canon which includes a lot of sexual violence.

However, I didn't quite expect this gratuitous a scene of sexual assault.

...I don't quite know how to gush over this one.

I nominated a fandom this year that I didn't have a chance to nominate last year, with absolutely ZERO fics in it. I got fic for that fandom this year and it was rather disappointing.

Someone else requested that fandom too and got fic that is about 25 times better than the one I got.

I'm happy because I still get to read the one great fic, but I don't want to gush over it too much and make my writer feel inadequate. Yuletide just got awkward.

This story (not written for me) ends with the unwarned-for suicide of a major character. To make matters worse, the author has tagged it with "no archive warnings apply" instead of either using the right warnings tag or picking "choose not to warn."

I got an...okay fic. The pairing is one that I really love and is rarely written, but the story itself is just...flat. I think I know who wrote it based on the style and the fact that all of that person's fic ends up reading this way. But, I do really appreciate them for trying, especially as I know mine was a PH.

I have a strong suspicion my gift writer hated writing for that fandom, didn't care for my favorite characters, and generally dgaf about the fic. There are some really easy to catch typos, and it feels rushed.

It makes for some awkward reading, not to mention awkward commenting. "Thanks for suffering through this for me and finishing the fic in time" is what I'd like to say, but I better find a way to soften it up.

I'm just waiting for my terrible fic to be linked on over here. :D *weeps* I really wanted to do the prompt justice, but on the chance they don't hate it, I'll be pleased (enough). I'd hate being the coal-giver.

On the other hand, my gift fic was unexpectedly great! Some spelling/grammar stuff here and there that could've used a beta, but the ideas and scenes were still so good with backstory and details and HNNG. And hints of my OTP throughout it was like a yummy cherry on top. I wasn't even sure this fandom would be chosen! (Then again, my other requests were from even smaller fandoms, so I guess it had the better chance anyways). Now I just wish the story I made was half as interesting.

but if you're going to write in a stylistically distinctive and mature literary fandom, maybe you should act like you've read the canon, and write above a third-grade reading level.

Sadly, no, this isn't even about my fic. This is me being bitter about two fics in a fandom I requested but didn't get. Of course now I'm kind of glad I didn't get them, because those stories with my name on them would have been sucky.

ARGH now I'm wondering if this about my fic. I'm sorry that I don't sound like the author! I tried to rationalize it by saying that the POV character in the fic is completely unlike the POV character in the novel so of course they wouldn't sound alike, but maybe that's uh, just a rationalization. I just clicked on the fics of someone I beta'd for and I can SEE where she used my suggestions and did brilliant things with them.

There's always someone you beta for who does nothing you suggest, even with apostrophes, and credits you, and makes you look like an illiterate weakling, but this person? OH I AM SO HAPPY. Their fic is awesome, and I know I helped make it that way.

I got optionally asked for Fandom OTP and instead accidentally* wrote gen about Secondary Character+Half-of-OTP with a background Other-Half-of-OTP/Tertiary Character, so that's going to go down well too.

(* It was supposed to be a much longer fic but I got stuck and then ran out of time and the first third worked by itself, so I ended up just using that.)
