Hey coalies!
You're all hard at work, so we already need a new post, even with the deadline being a month away.

ahh...new post smell

(Anonymous)

It's been so long since we had this much time to write that we don't know what to do with ourselves.

I know what to do: write ALL THE TREATS. And a longer-than-usual fic for my assignment, too.

Possibly I am trying to avoid family, too....

why do we need a new post at 3000 comments idgi

I imagine to keep the other post relatively captcha-free for the remaining few comment threads?

Defaulting and feeling bad

(Anonymous)

2012-11-24 02:33 am (UTC)

For the first year ever, I'm considering defaulting. I don't want to, but I'm really not feeling my assigned fandom. I got paired off to write for a friend of mine, and all three of her prompts are for long book series that I just haven't the time to get into.

I probably won't in the end, but augh I think this may be my last year doing Yuletide. I've only once got a prompt that I loved. The rest of the time, coming up with a fic has been like pulling teeth.

Re: Defaulting and feeling bad

(Anonymous)

2012-11-24 03:18 am (UTC)

I'm curious why you offered to write those fandoms if you don't have time to 'get into them'. I'm assuming you've read them already if you offered them?

I'm not judging, just curious. But if you're going to default, do it early. It sounds like her pinch hitter might need the extra time.

A Dilemma

(Anonymous)

2012-11-24 03:13 am (UTC)

Okay, so I have an idea for a treat. It's for a pairing with a slight age gap, and in canon one is an early teenager and one would be a pre-teen. The person who's asking for this wants the younger one to be aged up if any romance happens.

My idea involves starting it before the younger one is a teenager, but only pre-pre-ship/freaking out. Nothing would happen with any actual ship feelings until the younger one is over the age of consent. What would be the lowest minimum age you'd accept for the younger one? I'd ask the person via an anonymous comment, but I don't know the protocol for asking someone just for a treat.

Re: A Dilemma

(Anonymous)

2012-11-24 04:31 am (UTC)

I made an anonymous query to a treat recipient last year, after finding out the mods won't pass along non-assignment questions (they've got enough stuff on their plate already). So I think it's fine to ping them.

As for your actual question, ehhhhh . . . hard to say. Children can have "crushes" and often do, so as long as the situation doesn't have sexual overtones until later, I probably wouldn't be terribly skeeved out. The part I have more trouble with is where attachment starts at that young of an age, in conjunction with an age disparity, and then continues on to when they're older; that carries overtones to me of the younger character's attachment being, I dunno, taken advantage of? I don't even mean that sexually; I mean emotionally/psychologically/whatever. The cases I can think of where I've seen that done well, the characters always had some time apart between the childhood years and the older ones, which gave the younger character time to become their own person and decide, with a relatively clear mind, that they wanted the relationship.

Trying to shake my present

(Anonymous)

2012-11-24 06:06 pm (UTC)

I have a gift! Already! Which I'm super excited about. Except when I go to the Yuletide 2012 fandom list to try and work out which fandom it's in, none of the fandoms I requested are listed there.

Is there a delay in some of the fandoms showing up? Or has someone gifted me something by accident and it'll just disappear when they realize? I want to shake my present and try to guess what fandom it's in, but right now I'm really confused.

Did any of your requested fandoms have zero fics? Parent fandom categories can take a few days to show up.

Heh, for several of these it's pretty evident why the people defaulted. A lot of very specific letters that will be hard to write for someone who isn't interested in the exact same thing as the recipient.

*grumbles* Damn time zones.

On the plus side, only one prompt seemed interesting...and I'm not sure I would have dared do it - it's complicated.

So I ended up on the pitch hits list. I knew I was gonna, that I was way too obscure and picky, and I wish I could turn back time and rewrite my whole request list. But it got claimed so yay?
(Goodness I wish I wasn't so angsty about Yuletide. But its my fandom presence for the year. And I wouldn't be me without getting appropriately
worked up over something.)

Too much complaining on this meme?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-25 01:07 am (UTC)

I don't know, I didn't think so at first, but I'm starting to see why people think this place is against the spirit of yuletide. I didn't mind in previous years when it was somewhere we could get together and bitch about terrible gifts, but all of a sudden we're complaining about letters? We're just generally using this as somewhere to bitch about someone called adamant_steve? I don't know about you guys, but I just feel like this comm is constantly moving the coalposts.

Re: Too much complaining on this meme?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-25 01:14 am (UTC)

This is the only place I can have a group yuletide experience. There's not exactly a flurry of activity on the main comm right now, and when stories go up, it'll be post after post of recs (yawn). IRC chatting is a pain in the ass on my computer, and I never feel comfortable in the chatroom.

So I really don't care if occasionally the meme gets mean. There are nice posts, too, and a lot of people have been really helpful and friendly to me. Maybe it's a little rougher around the edges here, but I don't think it's a bad place or outside the spirit of yuletide. Wank has a long and storied history with yuletide, after all.

Fewer Requests?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-25 04:39 am (UTC)

Is it just me, or does it seem like (judging by letters and pinch hits) way more people than usual are only making three requests?

Not saying it's a bad thing or anything (though I'm sure anyone who had a tough time with their match to someone who did it might wish they had one more option to choose from), it's just a little surprising. I always have such trouble narrowing my choice down to only four!

Re: Fewer Requests?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-25 05:13 am (UTC)

I often have a hard time coming up with three requests. I try to think of fandoms that I would love to get fic for equally, so I won't be disappointed no matter which one gets written, but a lot of times I end up with two fandoms that I would love to get fic for and a whole bunch of fandoms that I would just really like to get fic for.

What is a dentist? Beside a doctor for your teeth, obviously.

When someone has signed up once under their regular name and once with a sock account, they refer to the sock as a "dentist". It started in the first post of the year on this meme, I think, when someone said they were getting their dentist to nominate fandoms for them.

Finding betas... good ones

(Anonymous)

2012-11-27 06:34 pm (UTC)

Sort of inspired by the discussion of concrit on the complaining about meme post, but how do you find good betas?

I find that a lot of people who advertise on the Yuletide comm when the beta post first goes up are distracted by their own stories around beta time and don’t respond to emails. Finding a beta on the chatroom is quicker (assuming you can get into chat in the first place) but the quality is really variable. (There’s at least one person in there who immediately volunteers to beta stuff they have only the barest acquaintance with. They’re a sweet person and I know they’re trying to be helpful, but they’re a terrible beta and the Cult Of Nice makes it really awkward to reject their useless offers.)

My non-Yuletide strategy is asking strangers who have written (or are credited as having edited) good stories in the relevant fandom. That’s less of an option this year, because I’m writing for a dentist and there’s a chance I’d accidentally ask their patient to beta.

Who have been good Yuletide betas for you and how did you find them? Do you have any secret tests or strategies for finding the real deal?

Re: Finding betas... good ones

(Anonymous)

2012-11-27 08:21 pm (UTC)

Most of the betas I've sourced from Yulechat have been excellent, with the exception of inforpenny - is that who you're talking about above?

She's so nice, and wants to help so much, but she just doesn't do editing. Twice now I've had fics back from her with two sentences saying only, "Yes, I think this is good!" Which is kind, but unhelpful. Next time I wind up with her as the only volunteer, I'll figure out a way to say "Okay, but I really need more detail," that doesn't sound like I'm kicking a puppy.

I don't want to be that one guy at the party

(Anonymous)

2012-11-27 08:16 pm (UTC)

Okay, so I got this person, and we had one fandom I legit thought I could write for. I came up with a plot and off I went. I've written them once already to ask about ships so it's not like I'm scared to ask.

All well and good but now I'm looking at their prompt and I'm like, well shit, because I've put some pretty graphic violence in, and they want like, fluff and shit I guess. Snooping around their Ao3, they mainly write and read fluff themselves, but they're into a couple of fandoms that by their very nature I would have thought would have made them okay with graphic violence, it's just like, not certain. Writing them and asking is out because that would just like, ruin the punch and stuff and now I'm basically wondering if I should scrap the original idea and do something else entirely. I mean, I can, I'm only signed up for two exchanges this year, but aughghgh.

tl;dr: Augh.

Re: I don't want to be that one guy at the party

(Anonymous)

2012-11-27 08:26 pm (UTC)

Hm. Suck.

Ask anyway, go through Elyn, and emphasise that you really want the graphic violence question to be hidden in other questions? Maybe even suggest a few false-lead questions? I may be teaching you to suck eggs, but hopefully, between you and Elyn, you can manage not to give the game away completely.

It would be a real pity for your original idea to be wasted (though you can always give it to someone else, I suppose, if you end up writing two fics for that prompt).

Anyone else who still hasn't started their fic? I thought I'd at least have a workable idea by now, but apparently not :(

I bet the vast majority of people haven't. I know I haven't and probably won't until about five days before deadline.

Writing a treat for specific optional details

(Anonymous)

2012-11-29 11:52 pm (UTC)

I've had something bookmarked to write a treat for (and started on the treat before assignments went out) which basically has only one idea in the optional details which is quite a specific story. It's my (totally nonexistent) ship and I love the idea, and I really want to write it.

I'm worried if it will be kind of a waste, though, if their recipient matched them on this fandom and writes something close to the optional details that they'll end up with two very similar fics. I know the chances are just as likely that they matched on a different fandom or that if their recipient was writing this fandom that they wouldn't completely stick to the optional details (I can see how it might not be to everyone's writing tastes). Even so, I can't help overthinking it too much that my fic is going to be redundant and not that much of a treat.

So what say you, coalies? How would you feel if you got two fics written for the same prompt?

Re: Writing a treat for specific optional details

(Anonymous)

2012-11-30 12:02 am (UTC)

I'd feel happy.

I'd also feel happy if my recipient got two stories for the prompt I'm working off. (Except the chance of that is low, because her prompts aren't posted publically.)

I think that this has come up before on this meme? To me, it seems very unlikely that fics you and another author write will be similar enough to seem redundant.

(I may be guilty of eyeing up another letter which has a specific prompt kind of like the one you mention.)

Post treats now or later?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-30 09:55 am (UTC)

I know the official line is that we should post treats over 1000 words now, as if the assigned writer drops out it makes things easier for the mods. But what are you all doing?

eg. I'm writing a treat right now, and I am not paying as much attention to the optional details as I would if it was my actual assignment. I mean, I'm not being a dick about it, and the story will fit in nicely with their requests, but at the same time it's not as much a gift story as my actual assignment is.

This feels like a particularly stupid dilemma, but dilemma it nonetheless is.

Re: Post treats now or later?

I'm definitely waiting. Why upload early and deprive the recipient of the additional fic they'd get if I held on until after deadline?

Canon being a dick

(Anonymous)

2012-12-01 11:57 am (UTC)

So, one of the canons I requested is still producing new material throughout the Yuletide season. One of the newest updates contained some things that I find kind of squicky - would it be unreasonable for me to add to my DYW that this development makes me feel a little uncomfortable, or should I assume that my writer will have already been planning on writing from the earlier stuff which aired and leave well alone?

I don't want to be unreasonable and keep editing my letter until the 25th, but at the same time, I know I'm not the only one who hasn't started their fic yet.

For reference, the thing I am finding squicky is not a trope like, idk, 'tentacles' but borderline abusive behaviour from one member of a ship I said I liked in canon... and my DYW only makes reference to the parts of their partner's behaviour which made me feel uncomfortable.

I mean, I guess I'm worried only because the canon is normally good at showing abusive behaviour as wrong and hurtful but it hasn't done so yet. OTOH, most fans of the show will probably see from the partner's reaction that this was hurtful and a few other people have been talking about the power dynamics of it all - this isn't new; exploring it is a pretty big part of the canon and has comprised a lot of the fannish activity already - so would it seem a little condescending for me to say 'HEY WRITER REMEMBER WHEN [CHARACTER X] DOES THIS SHITTY THING? I THINK THAT IS SHITTY. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE A FIC IN WHICH THAT WAS SECRETLY SUNSHINE AND UNICORN POOP KK XOX YOUR RECIP"?

Re: Canon being a dick

I would just leave it alone and hope for the best. This is one of the risks you take when you ask for an ongoing canon.
