Intimidating recipient, but the good kind

(Anonymous)

2012-11-02 10:05 pm (UTC)

My recipient is the author of my favourite fic from last year. We matched on the same fandom she wrote last year. Her story was long and meaty and charactery and a bit world-buildy and all the things! And her prompt — it's perfectly nice and undemanding and has lots of alternatives, she doesn't SAY "oh, write thousands of words of super-fic" — is perfect for the same kind of writer.

This could be awesome, but there's going to be some scary first.

Anyone else got a "can I rise to this?" assignment?

Re: Intimidating recipient, but the good kind

Yes, I know that feel, nonnie. It's my first Yuletide - I stumbled my way in through a fandom friend- and I managed to get someone who wrote at least half of all my favourite fics, and not just in the fandom we matched on either. The prompts they give are fine - not too specific, there're options if I get stuck and everything - but I'm panicking so hard about writing something crap and Ruining Yuletide.

It'll be awesome if I figure something out- it isn't quite the request I had anticipated but nothing challenging in itself; I think we just take different things from our fandom - but right now, I think I need to go lie down and tell myself everything's gonna be alright.

I got the very assignment I was hoping for, and my recipient mentions in her letter that she enjoys convoluted crossovers. The only trouble is that I don't know that she knows the canon for the source I'd like to cross her request with. Is it a dick move to write her a crossover knowing that she likes and welcomes them when it might not be a canon she knows? I plan to minimize the focus on the iffy canon and make it all about the character she did request, but I think the universes would work really well together, and there's an actor who crosses over both canons, which is why I'm considering it in the first place.

Opinions, meme? I don't want to ruin anyone's Yuletide, but I do want to give my recipient an epic adventure story that they will love.

I would suggest writing to elyn and see if she'll ask your recipient.

I was a little nervous about mine at first, because the request in the assignment seemed intimidating, but the letter allayed my concerns. It's the fandom I picked to challenge myself this year, so a little bit scary, but just a baby on the bear scale. Exciting, though!

Of course now I'm stalking this thread to see if my author pops up here... or if I can even tell...

I'm pretty happy. I got the fandom that I like the most and my recipient likes the same things I do.

Me too! I'm pretty pleased!

I even like one of their other requests, so if I did hit a brick wall, I could do a different story instead.

My recipient wants meta
I can't write meta

What are they interested in? Maybe we can give you some ideas without knowing the specifics.

I had been looking through the letters and found a lot I wanted to write as treats, but only one of the letters I had looked at had one of my offers. Sure enough, that's the one I get, and I already have an idea!

I'm fairly happy with my assignment. I got matched on a biggish fandom but I'm okay with that, the recipient and I seem to see eye to eye on the canon queer character well enough, but I'm a little iffy that their only prompt does involve said canon queer character, when they've nominated three others and there's at least one that I can't really see with that canon queer character. I think I'll have to ask Elyn for some more prompts if possible, though I have an idea or two.

Bright side, there's also a fandom I can definitely write a small treat in, though I don't think I have a 1K story in me for the fandom.

But yeah, I'm happier than I'm not for this one.

May I ask if there has been some controversy about the canon queer character in the fandom, like them being written as cis/het?

There's been some wank in one of my non-Yuletide fandoms about that sort of thing, and I didn't think it was particularly common... It was definitely the first time I'd ever seen it in any of my fandoms (because there are so many with canon queer characters, don'tchaknow?).

I got a semi-notorious crazy person and I'm seriously considering it. The only thing holding me back is that I want to get a giftfic.

Maybe I'll phone it in and orphan it.

My friend, who is a much better writer than me, basically got assigned the same fandom and pairing I did, and I'm worried my recipient will be let down by how subpar her giftfic from me is in comparison. :/

Would your friend be willing to cowrite/ghost-write? I'd do it for a good friend.

Re: Hardly a complaint but

Are there other letters with the same fandom/characters you can garner inspiration from? That's what I did one year where I didn't get any optional details.

I write gen and some pairings, but am really not confident writing strictly romance, or any porn, and I'm really worried my recipient won't be happy with something that has no porn. I'm trying to convince myself that really, she is okay with that, because her AO3 is only half porntastic.

OPTIONAL DETAILS, etc.

Also, she almost never comments on giftfic, and forgot to link her letter to the comm, so she likely won't get any treats to make up for the fic I write that she might not like at all.

If her A03 isn't 100% porn, you're totally fine, nonnie.

question about letters

(Anonymous)

2012-11-02 11:52 pm (UTC)

I posted the link to my letter on my AO3 signup for each fandom. Should I still go and post a link to my letter on the Yuletide Letters post? I have the same LJ name as my AO3 account, and I figure my recipient can't get too lost. Or does the letter-linking post have another use?

Re: question about letters

A lot of people use the letters on the letter post to find inspiration for treats, so you might as well post it. Maybe you'll get an extra fic!

Just like I feared...

(Anonymous)

2012-11-02 11:53 pm (UTC)

I mentioned this on the old meme, but since we got a new one... Please allow me to repost the basics:

I'm relly worried, because as it looks now, I got assigned to someone I never heard of before (i.e. hasn't replied to the DYW post). I looked up their journal, and it's just a bunch of Twitter reposts -- no letters ever posted. And looking at their AO3 account, I see they've participated in Yuletide twice before, but neither of those two times did they even bother to reply to their gift! And judging by those gifts they are big on gen, which... I am not.

As I feared, that was indeed my recipient. And as I'd feared even more, her signup was completely blank. Not a single goddamn word or any hint at all as to what she wants/doesn't want.

I feel so conflicted right now. I'm matched with a person who appears to not give a damn about Yuletide. I mean, if she did care even just a bit, she would have given me something to go on -- or, y'know, she would at least have thanked her previous writers!

Should I contact the mods and beg them to ask her for info? A part of me wants to do that, but at the same time... What if she does reply with "I just want gen"? It's not that I desperately want to write porn or something, but my strength definitely lies in writing romance/pre-slash/etc. Whereas now I guess I could just write anything I want and then be kinda blameless if it's not what she wanted. But it's hard for me to do that; this is a gift, after all.

Plus, like I said before, then there's the "needy stories" list. We matched on a tiiiny fandom (one so called request from her, and one offer from me), so I don't expect anyone else to read it. And I'd be fine with that! It's kinda typical Yuletide for me, since I'm into obscure stuff. But I don't think I can expect even that one comment from her, so.

I don't wanna default, but I just... I'm sorry for the super-long post, guys. I got some supportive comments on the last post when I first mentioned this, and I really needed to vent further. Thanks for listening

If there's nothing in her details section, then there's a chance she won't respond if you ask the mods for details. You could wait out the weekend, and if nothing appears, ask? And then if nothing happens... just write what you want.

Honestly, at the point where someone doesn't give you any indication of what to do, and if they don't respond to questions, I think the best thing to do is to avoid common major dislikes (death, non-con) and just write something for yourself.

(Even if you end up not wanting to ask the mods, waiting out the weekend may give you a better feeling about it, too.)

Also, sometimes someone's pre-slash can be someone else's gen. So even if she does want gen, I think you could maybe still fill it. If you know a gen-writer maybe they could read it over for you and see whether they find it gennish or romantic.

Things you wish you knew about your assignment

Mine says nothing about what pairings they like.

Not having pairing knowledge seems like it could be awkward, anon. :( Sorry about that.

I wish my person had listed specific prompts instead of just genres that they like. They like lighter and happier things than I had imagined a prompt for this group of characters being, so I'm stumped at the moment. But I feel like that's a silly thing to ask Elyn about.

I'm planning a canon review for this weekend and hopefully that'll give me an idea.

I'm writing for someone who wrote one of my favourite (long, beautifully crafted, literary) Yuletide fics last year. Three of their requests are for similar canons and the other (which I matched on) feels like the idiot cousin in the corner.

I'll get over myself and write something fun, but hold my hand, meme!

My assignment is fine, but when I compare it to last year...

(Anonymous)

2012-11-03 12:49 am (UTC)

...it's almost boring.

Last year was my first Yuletide, and I was super-stoked and pumped up to write an amazing fic. I ended up with a request completely out of my comfort zone, but by the writing gods, I delivered. My recipient loved it, too.

This year, my assignment is for completely tame friendship fic. They've written all G-rated fluff with one T-rated fade-to-black, and I have complete confidence I can write a fic that will please both of us. But after the intense freak-out-adrenalin-rush of last year...I'm trying not to feel complacent.

I refuse to let myself slack off, though. I'm going to write a solid, fun, nicely gen adventurous fic!! Yeah! *will make herself stoked this year too, damn it!* (And I'm relieved that now I won't be getting a reputation for always writing non-con at Yuletide...)

So write longfic! Write poetry! Write a complex time travel plot! Write epic sibling confrontation! Gen does not have to equal non-challenging.

Treat or Assignment?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-03 12:57 am (UTC)

I signed up for something fairly popular. It's a pretty fluffy, silly canon.

The person I got assigned to wants really filthy porn or angst. They were very, very clear they really wanted porn with a dynamic that squicks the fuck out of me.

I can't write it.

I have a really brilliant humorous gen idea for the canon. I'm good at humor--it's my strength! Do I gift them with this, or do I treat the person who really wanted it and give my recipient something, er, else? I can't write them what they want, but then, I don't think I can write ANYTHING they want. I have an idea I can turn into a 1,000 word fic that's angsty, but the humorous gen will be pretty fabulous and will fit the canon really well.

Am I more of a jerk if I give them something TOTALLY against their request, or something short and not very good, giving someone ELSE a really great treat? Either way, I feel like shit. I wanted to make someone happy, and no matter what I do I feel like I'm being kind of a jerk. :(

Re: Treat or Assignment?

(Anonymous)

2012-11-03 01:03 am (UTC)

I think it's less jerky to write something that's at least a little to their tastes than to go totally against their requests. I would give the treat to the person who would like it, and do angst as well as you can for your assignment. (As long as it won't completely squick you out or make you sick or something.)

You may also be able to get a beta who can tell you how to up the angst slightly. With genres, sometimes a beta doesn't need to know the canon, just the genre. If they give you a few specific ideas to make it more angsty, it might be easier than trying to come up with them on your own. You may also be able to get an idea from a list of angst tropes.

"prefer slash"

(Anonymous)

2012-11-03 01:07 am (UTC)

My recipient didn't write a letter, and for every fandom the optional details simply say "prefer slash, [genre]." Does this mean they want porn? They didn't list any pairings but they did only request male characters.

It means they're a douche and you should write whatever you want (or ask elyn to have them elaborate)

crossover with an ineligible fandom

(Anonymous)

2012-11-03 01:43 am (UTC)

for the fandom that i was matched to, my recipient gave a long description of her dream fic -- a crossover with an ineligible fandom that i frankly can't stand. then, at the end, she wrote, "but in a pinch, this [general idea] will do."

now i'm really annoyed and worried she won't like my fic, even if it fits her half-hearted addendum.

am i overreacting?

Re: crossover with an ineligible fandom

(Anonymous)

You're not over reacting, that was a completely unreasonable thing of her to do! But try not to let that put you off writing a fic that you can actually manage and which (hopefully) you want to write.

In other news: I'm thinking about creating a sock puppet and intentionally gifting the crappy requesters bad treats, so like, boosette can get the fic we all want to give her for her spn/vampire crossover craycray.

So, my recipient has requested slash in every fandom, but says she's okay with genderswap.

I'm trying figure out if she'll really be okay with lesbians, or possibly something with queer gender stuff going on, since one of the characters is canonically genderqueer already. But I don't really want to ask Elynn because argh.

Re: Slash or femslash

I think she might have also meant it's okay if one character is female and it turns het - as long as they are together.
